Previous | Home | NextThis painting by Samuel Lines (1773-1863), famous for his landscape portraits, gives us an idea of the appearance of Birmingham at the time. Although the painting is dated 1821 (30 years later) and its prospect is the wrong direction (the view is west), it shows us that countryside was not far away from the center of town, and that Fair Hill was deep in the country. The view is from the dome of St. Philip's Cathedral; the church seen in the painting is Christ Church, which no longer exists and which is at the approximate location of Victoria Square, just to the east of Chamberlain Square.
